UKRAINIAN AUTOCEPHALOUS ORTHODOX CHURCH
OF NORTH & SOUTH AMERICA
AND THE DIASPORA
STATEMENT OF THE PRESIDING HIERARCH
OF THE UAOC OF NORTH & SOUTH AMERICA & THE DIASPORA
REGARDING THE TERRORIST ATTACKS IN LONDON
It is with extreme sorrow and concern, that we, the hierarchy, clergy, religious and faithful of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church, with the blessing and prayers of our First Hierarch, His Beatitude, Metropolitan MEFODIY, of Kyiv and All Ukraine, offer our condolences to the people of Great Britain and the City of London, after the attacks of terrorism that occurred on July 7, 2005.
This inexcusable act of hatred is clearly the work of evil and an example of the struggle between goodness and atrocity that go on every day. While God's Spirit is always at work in and around us, so too, is the evil one, who takes every opportunity to make use of those who will cooperate with the work to bring malady and suffering into the world. It is always the result of misinformed minds, triumphalistic pride and a general lack of tolerance for others that create such situations.
Those of us in the USA and in many places throughout the world, know well, the feelings of intense loss, emotional strain and violation now being felt by the people of the United Kingdom. In addition to the personal tragedies felt by the families and loved ones of those lost or injured, there is also the common feeling of betrayal and anger, felt by the whole population. Now is the time for greater solidarity among all people of good will, to make every effort to decrease any hatred, ill-feelings or close-mindedness that create tragedies such as the one just witnessed.
To all of the citizens of London and the United Kingdom as a whole, we offer our most sincere prayers and support at this difficult moment in history and pledge that we will continue to promote peace and justice, so that the good will of all people will be better served.
From our Metropolitan Chancery, July 7, 2002,
Archbishop-Metropolitan of the United States & the Americas
Together with the Council of Hierarchs of the UAOC of North & South America & the Diaspora
