TO THE HIERARCHY, CLERGY, RELIGIOUS AND FAITHFUL OF THE UKRAINIAN GREEK CATHOLIC CHURCH:

December 14, 2000

Dearly Beloved Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

!

We are deeply saddened by the news that the Patriarch of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church, His Beatitude, Myroslav Ivan Cardinal Lubachivsky, departed this earthly life today, leaving the Church of L'viv without a spiritual father.

As Ukrainians, we recognize the strong leadership he provided to our community, both in Ukraine and the Diaspora and the commitment that the Patriarch had to the cause of Ukrainian independence and a united Ukrainian Church. In this way, he built upon the labors and goals of his two immediate predecessors, the great Ukrainian patriots, Metropolitan Andrei Sheptyskyj and Patriarch Josyp Slipyj.

While he will certainly be sorely missed by our people everywhere, we are confident that the long life of labor in the Lord's service which he enjoyed will be a shining example for those who follow after him.

On behalf of the People of God of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church in the United States of America, we offer our sincere condolences and prayers to His Grace, Bishop Lyubomyr Husar and all of our brothers and sisters of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church.

May His Memory Be Eternal!
